BEYOND EXPECTATION

"Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think..." — Ephesians 3:20–21 (KJV)
Introduction
One of the greatest limitations of man is that we often pray according to what we can imagine. We ask God for what we can see, measure, or understand. Yet the God we serve is not limited by our imagination. His plans are always greater than our requests, His thoughts higher than our thoughts, and His blessings far beyond our expectations.
Ephesians 3:20 declares:
«"Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us."»
Notice the progression:
- Above what we ask.
- Above what we think.
- Exceedingly above.
- Abundantly above.
- Exceedingly abundantly above.
God does not merely answer prayers. He often exceeds them.
Today, we shall see this truth from the lives of Abraham and Sarah, and from Jesus' first miracle at Cana of Galilee.

I. ABRAHAM ASKED FOR A SON, BUT GOD PROMISED HIM A NATION
Abraham's greatest desire was simple.
He wanted a child.
Year after year, he watched his body grow older while Sarah remained barren.
His prayer was not complicated:
«"Lord, give me a son."»
But God's response was astonishing.
Instead of promising only one child, God promised him generations beyond number.
God said:
«"I will make of thee a great nation..." (Genesis 12:2)»
Again,
«"Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars... so shall thy seed be." (Genesis 15:5)»
Again,
«"I have made thee a father of many nations." (Genesis 17:5)»
Abraham desired one son.
God planned nations.
Abraham thought of his family.
God thought of the whole world.
That is Beyond Expectation.

II. ABRAHAM DID NOT SEE THE FULL PROMISE, YET GOD KEPT IT
During Abraham's lifetime, he saw only a very small part of God's promise.
He saw Isaac.
He saw Jacob.
He saw a few grandchildren.
But where were the nations?
Where were the millions?
Where were the countless descendants like the stars of heaven?
He did not see them physically.
Yet today:
- Israel exists.
- The Jewish nation came through him.
- Multitudes of believers in Christ are called the children of Abraham by faith.
- The promise is still unfolding thousands of years later.
God's promise continued long after Abraham left this earth.
This teaches us something profound:
God's promises are not limited by our lifetime.
Sometimes we judge God's faithfulness by what happens before we die.
God measures faithfulness across generations.
A promise from God can outlive the person who received it.

III. ABRAHAM LIVED FOR SOMETHING GREATER THAN THIS WORLD
Why was Abraham able to keep believing?
Because his eyes were fixed on eternity.
The Bible says:
«"For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God." (Hebrews 11:10)»
Again:
«"But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly." (Hebrews 11:16)»
Abraham understood that God's promises do not end at the grave.
Even today, Abraham is not disappointed.
The God who promised him is still fulfilling every word.
Every new believer added to Christ's Kingdom is another testimony that God's covenant with Abraham continues.
What Abraham asked for was a son.
What God gave him spans generations, nations, and eternity.
That is Beyond Expectation.

IV. CANA OF GALILEE — FROM NO WINE TO ABUNDANT WINE
John 2 tells another beautiful story.
A wedding feast had run out of wine.
It was an embarrassing situation.
Mary simply came to Jesus.
Her concern was small.
"There is no wine."
At first, Jesus appeared uninterested.
«"Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come." (John 2:4)»
Many people would have stopped there.
But Mary understood something.
She trusted Jesus.
She turned to the servants and declared:
«"Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it." (John 2:5)»
That sentence became the key to the miracle.
Jesus instructed them to fill six waterpots with water.
The servants obeyed.
They filled them to the brim.
When they drew out the water, it had become wine.
Not ordinary wine.
The governor of the feast testified that the best wine had been kept until last.
They only asked for enough wine to continue the celebration.
Jesus gave them something far better than they expected.
He turned an embarrassing shortage into overflowing abundance.
That is Beyond Expectation.

V. THE SECRET OF EXPERIENCING BEYOND EXPECTATION IS OBEDIENCE
Both stories reveal the same principle.
Abraham obeyed.
When God called him, he left his country.
When God told him to wait, he waited.
When God commanded him to offer Isaac, he obeyed.
His obedience positioned him for promises beyond imagination.
Hebrews 11:8 says:
«"By faith Abraham, when he was called... obeyed."»
---
The servants obeyed.
Mary gave one instruction:
«"Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it."»
Jesus said,
"Fill the waterpots."
They filled them.
He said,
"Draw out."
They drew out.
There was no argument.
No delay.
No questioning.
Their obedience became the bridge between ordinary water and extraordinary wine.
---
VI. OUR OBEDIENCE DETERMINES THE DIMENSION OF GOD'S MANIFESTATION
Many people desire miracles.
Few are willing to obey.
Many want extraordinary blessings.
Few follow extraordinary instructions.
God's exceeding blessings often come on the other side of obedience.
Sometimes the instruction may not even appear connected to the miracle.
Imagine the servants saying,
"What has filling pots with water got to do with wine?"
Yet their obedience unlocked the miracle.
Likewise, Abraham could have asked,
"What has leaving my father's house got to do with becoming a father of nations?"
But he obeyed.
Obedience often precedes understanding.

Conclusion
Our God is the God of Beyond Expectation.
Abraham prayed for one son.
God made him the father of many nations.
Abraham hoped for an earthly family.
God gave him an eternal legacy.
The wedding guests only needed more wine.
Jesus gave them the best wine.
Both stories remind us that God is able to do far more than we ask or imagine.
But there is one common pathway:
Obedience.
Abraham obeyed.
Mary instructed the servants to obey.
The servants obeyed.
Every child of God who desires to experience God's "exceeding abundantly above" must become a person of complete obedience.
When we obey God, we move beyond our plans into His purpose.
Beyond our requests into His abundance.
Beyond our imagination into His glory.
May the Lord bring each one of us into a season where His answers exceed our prayers, His blessings surpass our expectations, and His purpose outlives our lifetime, in the mighty name of Jesus.
Amen.
